Sindh Assembly Thursday session lasted for a few minutes as the Speaker adjourned the house without holding proceedings due to what appeared a lack of quorum. Interestingly, 52 members of Sindh Assembly were among those legislators whose memberships have been suspended by the Election Commission for not submitting details of their assets and liabilities.

However, lack of quorum is not being digested a cogent reason behind the adjournment of the session. The Assembly sources wishing not to be identified told Business Recorder that it was a pre-planned move by the treasury benches. They said the assembly officials were ordered the other night to be ready to close the house doors as soon as speaker Agha Siraj Durrani announces adjourning the session, with a view to prevent opposition members' entry because it would be hard for the speaker to adjourn the session after their entry.

MMA's legislator Syed Abdul Rasheed was surprised to see this. He said provincial legislature session never began on time; reason behind adjourning of the session in haste was something else. As per speaker's announcement, now the house will meet on Monday at 2 pm.

Talking to this scribe, MMA's member said that 52 legislators of Sindh Assembly were suspended because of their failure follow the Election Commission's guidelines. "Even then, the session could have been adjourned for an hour and not for days," he said, noting that the majority in the house hails from the provincial PPP government.

MMA's lone legislator also expressed dismay over the otiose Opposition parties lawmakers who too failed to file the details sought by the ECP prior to the deadline. Even Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry failed to comply with the Election Commission's requirement, he lamented.
